Sustainability is no longer optional—buyers, regulators, and consumers in India and across the world are demanding rapid adoption of sustainable practices. To support this essential objective, Fairtrade India, in collaboration with the Centre for Social Markets (CSM), has launched the Sustainability Clinic, a transformative initiative designed to help textile manufacturers resolve their sustainability related challenges and adopt more sustainable practices. These practices relate to addressing key concerns such as reducing carbon emissions, improving energy efficiency, better water and wastewater management, reduce toxic chemical use, certification concerns, and other implementation related issues for adopting environmental and social sustainability practices.
With the funding support from the European Union SWITCH ASIA programme and a strategic partnership with the Tiruppur Exporter’s Association (TEA), the initiative has already made significant strides in Tamil Nadu, one of India’s largest textile-producing and exporting regions.
The Sustainability Clinic has been started with a focus on Tamil Nadu. Fairtrade India has a long history of working in Tamil Nadu, a state recognized as a textile production powerhouse. This region is home to numerous textile production hubs that cater to both domestic and international markets. The Tiruppur cluster alone is a major textile hub and one of the largest exporters of knitted garments globally. With strong support and input from TEA, Tamil Nadu continues to be an essential part of India’s textile manufacturing and export industry. By focusing on this key region, the Sustainability Clinic ensures that sustainable practices are seamlessly integrated into the local textile industry, benefiting MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) that are vital to the economy.
While the Sustainability Clinic’s initial focus is on Tamil Nadu we have got a lot of interest from other textiles production hubs across India and are evaluating where to expand our services next. Even if your factory is currently not in Tamil Nadu do contact us on the helpline: +91-9630008200 or send us an email on sustainabilityclinic@csmworld.org with your sustainability related queries and we will try our utmost to resolve your concern.
The Sustainability Clinic specifically targets MSME textile factories that face unique challenges in implementing sustainability measures. Our goal is to provide localized solutions in a language that suits each factory’s needs, simplifying the transition to more sustainable practices.
To date, the pilot program in Tamil Nadu has already connected with over 200 factories in and around Tiruppur. The clinic provides hands-on guidance to manufacturers in key areas such as:
By empowering local textile manufacturers, particularly MSMEs, the Sustainability Clinic is bridging the gap between the demand for sustainability in international markets and the ability of Indian manufacturers to meet these requirements.
